Since "Curtis" was originally a family surname, "Curtis Place" seemed like a fun twist on the idea of "Astor Place", which is an actual subway station. The vent toward the top of this photo became the template for the stencil that Curtis created for the "tile" frieze at the top of the wall, which makes the vent blend in better.
